London, United Kingdom (PRWEB UK) 5 September 2013

According to a July 2013 survey of utility industry executives carried out by Zpryme and eMeter, A Siemens Business, nearly half (47%) believe utilities are not prepared to handle the "data explosion from smart grid technologies”.

“This demonstrates that while the move towards the smart grid continues, the value from the inundation of data this brings is yet to be realised. To ensure that the value of utility data is capitalised upon to drive smart investments and meet future demands on the grid, Grid Analytics Europe 2013, a pan-European Conference, Exhibition & Networking Forum will take place 23-24 October 2013 at Hilton London Docklands, UK,” says Rebecca Davison, Programme Director at Phoenix Forums, producers of Grid Analytics Europe 2013. “Two days of case study reviews, in-depth discussions and face to face networking will equip TSOs and DSOs with the practical guidance and analytics techniques to leverage utility data for improved grid stability, network planning and asset management.”

Practical experience-based sessions focused on big data management and analytics for utilities will be delivered by leading European utilities including Fortum Distribution, ENEL, EDP, Red Eléctrica de España, EDF, Enexis, Western Power Distribution, Elektrilevi OÜ, Agder Energi Nett, SSEPD, Fortum Sähkönsiirto Oy and Elektro Gorenjska. International insights and expertise will also be shared by US DSO Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE). Neel Gulhar, Smart Grid Programme Manager at BGE will be sharing his experiences of leveraging smart metering information to better understand and manage energy usage, and enhance customer engagement in smart meter roll-out and adoption.

The comprehensive programme will deep-dive into how leading utilities are capturing, storing, cleaning and analysing the high volumes of data entering the grid. Key topics for discussion include identifying and storing meaningful data; interconnecting traditionally independent sources of data; managing interoperability and harmonisation issues between data systems and tools; leveraging data analytics to forecast energy trends and prevent outages; and using data to carry out proactive maintenance and asset management, among others.

One of the most critical challenges when working with utility data is ensuring its quality and integrity. Data quality will be a key focus in the 2-day programme, with experts including Arto Matsinen, Asset Data Controller at Fortum Sähkönsiirto Oy, providing firsthand experiences of data quality improvement techniques and strategies: “In my presentation I will share some practical examples of how bad data quality can impact on daily business processes or in smart grid projects, not by just presenting possible causes, but also by explaining how we have utilised agile methods to improve our data quality and by doing that have avoided negative business impacts."

Tech innovators and analytics experts from HP, Oracle, Accenture, Capgemini, Ovum, EPRI, Quanta Technology, The Centre for Sustainable Energy, Ventyx, an ABB Company, OSIsoft and Smarter Grid Solutions, will be sharing the latest developments in systems, tools and techniques for utility big data management and analytics in panel debates and practical sessions. A highly focused exhibition of the latest innovations in data management solutions, specific to the utility environment, will run alongside the conference, with opportunity for high-impact networking throughout the event.
