European Commission Vice-President Viviane Reding has called for a ‘United States of Europe’, stating that the UK would *not* be a part of the new state.
Speaking at the University of Cambridge’s law faculty, she said:
“There is a strong case for a true fiscal and ultimately political union. In my personal view, the eurozone should become the United States of Europe.”
Drawing a comparison with Britain’s wartime prime minister, she then said, “Like Winston Churchill, I believe that the UK will not be part of this, but it should remain a close ally with the federated eurozone, with which it would continue to share a common market, a common trade policy and hopefully a common security agenda,”
She went on to say that given the amount of integration that has happened between Eurozone states, including the Commission gaining powers to scrutinise nation budgets, it was now only right that they should become fully federated: “A few years ago no one could have imagined member states being prepared to cede this amount of sovereignty.”
However, she acknowledged growing hostility within the UK, saying that British politicians have “abandoned their policy of pushing for ever more enlargement of the EU,” and that Britain was “gradually, inexorably, drifting away” from the European Union.
She also criticised the quality of debate in Britain over an EU referendum, saying that there are “so many lazy assumptions,” and attacked calls to reduce immigration from EU states: “Simply trying to project all problems on the supposed issue of too many foreigners moving into the country is certainly not the answer”
Reding has drawn criticism over the past few days for her outspoken pro-federalist stance. She said that the British public are too ‘uninformed’ about the EU and boasted that 70 percent of UK laws are made by the EU.
