Ninety-one percent of WhatsApp downloads come from outside the United States, according to data collected between January 2012 and January 2014 by App Annie.
WhatsApp, the mobile messaging platform that’s making headlines because of its astounding $19 billion acquisition by Facebook, leans heavily on emerging markets for its download and revenue success.
· *WhatsApp was the most popular messaging app by combined iOS App Store and Google Play downloads worldwide during the time period*. The recently acquired app beat out all its competitors in downloads: Skype, LINE, and its new parent company’s app, Facebook Messenger.
· *WhatsApp is huge in emerging markets*: Brazil, India, and Mexico combined accounted for 29% of all WhatsApp downloads during the two-year time period.
· *But it's also big in Europe: Germany and Spain each comprised 6% of the overall download share*.
· *In 2013, WhatsApp led all other messaging apps in revenue in four key developing markets: Mexico, Brazil, India, and Russia*. That includes iOS App Store and Google Play revenue in 2013, according to App Annie's 2013 Retrospective.
But WhatsApp wasn't the revenue king in all markets.
Skype beat WhatsApp in revenue generation in the United States, Canada, and Australia.
LINE was the leading messaging app in East Asian countries by revenue, excluding Mainland China, which was led by WeChat.
